Clinton Township Clerk Kim Meltzer Earns Master Municipal Clerk Designation
Clinton Township Clerk Kim Meltzer has earned the coveted designation of Master Municipal Clerk, a certification awarded to a fraction of clerks nationwide who successfully complete rigorous educational training in the performance of complex municipal duties.
Meltzer, who has served as clerk since 2012, received the designation in March from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. Master Municipal Clerk, MMC, is the highest ranking certification awarded to clerks around the world. Only 60 clerks in Michigan have the certification.
“In light of fast-moving changes in technologies, elections and record-keeping, I believe that continuing education is critically important in my role as the elected clerk,” Meltzer said. “I am pleased to bring the latest and greatest resources and information to the Clinton Township Clerk’s Office.”
In order to earn the certification, Meltzer completed courses in Election Administration, Records Management, Public Information and Government Transparency. In addition to the courses, the program also has a professional and social contribution component and a commitment to lifelong learning.
“The program provided expansive training of nearly every function of a municipal clerk,” Meltzer, a former state representative, added. “I am already using some of the technologies and implementing programs to best serve our residents and businesses.”
In wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the clerk’s office has relied on electronic systems to ensure day-to-day functions run smoothly. Currently, the office is using Laserfiche software to maintain and provide essential records for residents and businesses safely and securely.
“Immediately after I was elected, I saw the need for an electronic content management system in the township,” Meltzer said. “During the COVID-19 crisis, our systems have been very beneficial because we can continue to maintain essential functions with registrations, permits and filings.”
In addition to Meltzer, Deputy Clerk Kim Irvine has also earned the Master Municipal Clerk certification. Clinton Township is one of only a limited number of municipalities in the U.S. to have both a clerk and deputy clerk with the designation.
“I am excited to continue meeting the changing needs of our residents and businesses, and adapting to the latest in technology,” Meltzer added. “It is certainly a great benefit we can offer to the township.”
